We saw a clear pattern in recent years of the governments to limit citizens’ internet access across the Middle East. But most recently, it is in Egypt that this phenomenon seems to be most rampant.
Egypt has been strictly restricting the space for internet freedom, targeting not only journalists, but bloggers and youtubers alike. The government has blocked dozens, if not hundreds, of news websites, accusing them of terrorism and misinformation. Since then, according to the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE), the Egypt authorities have blocked access to nearly 500 websites, most of which are media sites.
The website blocking is just part of a wider crackdown against civil society in Egypt, as many human rights groups have been banned from traveling and NGOs have had their assets frozen.
However, with the VPN and proxy in place, you can still get around the blocking of websites.
